QUEENSLAND property holders are encouraged to register their unwanted agricultural and veterinary chemicals for Agsafe's ChemClear collection, set to begin in July.
The initiative is a program which provides a safe, effective and convenient path for users to dispose of their unwanted agvet chemicals.
The ChemClear program encourages farmers and other agvet chemical users to clean up their farms and chemical stores to ensure sound environmental practices, and register unused and unknown chemicals for collection and safe disposal.
The chemicals are categorised under two groups that indicate whether fees are collected.
Group 1 chemicals are collected free of charge. These chemicals are:
- in their original container
- label intact and readable
- manufactured or supplied by companies participating in the AgStewardship programs
- registered, suspended or withdrawn chemicals whose registration has ceased within the past two years
- within two years of the chemicals expiration date
- not held by distributors or agvet stores as unwanted inventory.
Group 2 chemicals are those chemicals that are:
- no longer registered for use (exceeding two years from de-registration)
- unknown
- unlabelled
- expired (exceeding two years from expiration date)
- mixed agvet chemicals
- chemicals from non-participating manufacturers.
A per L/kg fee applies for disposal of group 2 chemicals. However, the Queensland government has agreed to subsidise the costs, which will cover 50-75 per cent of the collection.
A quotation is provided to the waste holder prior to a collection being scheduled for pickup of these items.
Agsafe general manager Dominique Doyle said ChemClear gave farmers the option to dispose of their chemicals responsibly.
"Farmers have huge expenses and need to use all chemicals they purchase where possible," Ms Doyle said.
"When they don't have a use for them, or have inherited redundant chemicals, they're making a conscious decision to dispose of those chemicals in a responsible way.
"Farmers understand that they are the custodians of the land, and are always mindful of sustainable farming practices.
"ChemClear enables farmers to safely dispose of chemicals off farms and out of rural communities. Following the recent floods, it is more important than ever to remove any unidentified chemicals safely".
Waste holders have until Sunday June 13 to book their unwanted chemicals online or with the ChemClear hotline.
Registered users will be notified of collection locations and dates in their council area by June.
Inventory needed to register
ChemClear requires waste holders to prepare an inventory of their chemicals to be able to register.
Registered users will have to name the product, manufacturer, container size and the remaining quantity in the container to enable a registration.
If the container has no label on it, ChemClear requires the size of the container, whether it is a powder, granule or liquid and the remaining quantity in the container.
Chemical containers displaying the DrumMuster logo are eligible for free collection.
Agvet containers that are unlabeled, missing a logo, expired, mixed or from non-participating manufacturers, are designated fee-for-service products incurring a per L/kg fee for disposal.
A quote will be supplied for fee-for-service chemicals before collection.
Retrieval vehicles will be collecting registered chemicals from allocated sites in each shire council area where a registration has been received.
