ALL the talk may be about rain producing La Nina conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean, but October looks set to be a relatively dry month for Queensland.
Bureau of Meteorology modelling shows blue skies for much of the state for the next eight days, with the exception of some 1-5mm falls for the far south west and some coastal areas.
However, the same mapping shows more promising falls down the centre of the Northern Territory, into South Australia, NSW and Victoria.
Also suggesting October will be dry is BOM mapping shows big parts of Queensland have only a 65 per cent chance of exceeding median rainfall for the month (see map below). Only a section of the far north west corner shows an 80pc chance of beating the monthly average.
According to BOM there is a risk of a thunderstorm in the far south west later this afternoon, following areas of raised dust over south western parts of the state in the morning.
On Tuesday the trough and cloud band will linger, with a medium to high chance of showers and patchy rain in the far south west.
BOM says a weak low near New Caledonia will generate increasing easterly swell for the south east coast.
There is a slight to medium chance of showers about the east coast, but it will be mostly sunny elsewhere.
A very high fire danger is in place for the Peninsula district.
